Basal metabolic rate is the energy your body spends just staying alive: pumping blood, drawing breath, keeping organs warm and working, long before you stand up or lift anything. This calculator estimates that baseline with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, then applies an activity multiplier to estimate Total Daily Energy Expenditure — TDEE — the calories a typical day actually burns.
The result panel lists four numbers. The headline BMR sits at the top in calories per day. Mifflin-St Jeor is a straight line of arithmetic: ten times body weight in kilograms, plus 6.25 times height in centimeters, minus five times age in years, then a sex constant — add 5 for men, subtract 161 for women. The equation itself only understands metric, so the imperial tab converts first: pounds become kilograms at 0.453592 each, inches become centimeters at 2.54 each. Both tabs therefore agree on the result to within a calorie or two.
