What This Cooking Converter Converts

The page works on cooking units in two separate categories, a dozen in total: volume — teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fluid ounces, milliliters, liters — and weight — ounces, pounds, grams, kilograms. You pick a category, a source unit, a target unit, and a value; the result appears below, formatted to three decimals.

The conversion stays within its category. Cups become tablespoons or milliliters; pounds become grams or kilograms. A cup never becomes a gram on this page, because that step needs the ingredient's density — the tool cannot know whether you are measuring water or flour.

The page is aimed at everyday kitchen math: halving a batch, sizing a batter, or swapping a measuring tool you lack. It deliberately avoids density tables and ingredient lookups, which belong to a different class of calculator.

How the Unit Table Works

Each category has one anchor unit, and every other unit is a fixed ratio against it. Volume anchors to the teaspoon: a tablespoon is 3 teaspoons, a cup is 48, a fluid ounce is 6, a milliliter is 4.92892 teaspoons, and a liter is 0.00492892. Weight anchors to the gram: an ounce is 28.3495 grams, a pound is 453.592, and a kilogram is a thousand. Every conversion is one division and one multiplication across that table, so a cup to milliliters and a cup to tablespoons both resolve exactly.

Because every factor is fixed, the order of the math never matters: converting 1 cup to milliliters and back returns to exactly one cup. The dropdowns default to the first two entries of the list, so the page starts at teaspoons to tablespoons in US order.

Why 4.92892? The US customary teaspoon is one sixth of a fluid ounce, and a fluid ounce is 29.5735 milliliters, which lands the teaspoon at 4.92892. The page inherits that chain rather than inventing a rounder number.

The US/Metric toggle changes only the order of the dropdowns — American units listed first or metric units listed first. The factors underneath are identical either way. Nothing you type leaves this page — the conversion runs in your browser.

A Worked Example: Two Cups of Water

Two cups is the everyday case. In the volume list it converts to 96 teaspoons, 32 tablespoons, 16 fluid ounces, and 473.176 milliliters. The page's cup is the US customary 236.59 ml, not the rounded 240 ml that some recipes assume, so two cups report 473.176 rather than 480.

The weight side behaves the same way: 1 pound converts to 453.593 grams and 0.454 kilograms; 1 kilogram converts to 2.205 pounds. Enter the same values with the metric-first dropdown order and the numbers do not change — only the menu order does.

Other common checks behave as expected: 500 milliliters lands at 2.113 cups, 16 ounces lands at exactly 1 pound, and a full kilogram converts to 2.205 pounds. The calculator's internal value stays precise even when the display rounds.

The same arithmetic handles fractions comfortably: half a cup converts to 8 tablespoons, and three quarters of a cup to 36 teaspoons. No entry needs to be a whole number.

Can I convert cups to grams with this page?

No. Volume and weight are separate lists, and cup-to-gram conversion needs the ingredient's density, which the tool does not ask about. A cup of water weighs about 240 g, while a cup of all-purpose flour weighs roughly 120–130 g — the page cannot know which you mean. A kitchen scale settles the question directly.

Why does 2 cups come out 473.176 ml and not 480?

The tool builds from the US customary teaspoon of 4.92892 ml, which makes a cup 236.59 ml. The rounded 240 ml per cup that many recipes use is the legal cup. The page reports the customary figure.

What does the US/Metric toggle actually change?

Only the order in which units appear in the two dropdowns. The conversion factors are identical in both modes, so results never differ between them.

Is a US tablespoon the same as a UK one?

Nearly. A US tablespoon is 14.7868 milliliters; the Australian tablespoon found in some older cookbooks is 20. The page converts the US version, so a recipe written for the Australian spoon needs its own adjustment.

What is the difference between fluid ounces and ounces?

Fluid ounces sit in the volume list and measure liquid space; ounces sit in the weight list and measure mass. Six teaspoons fill a fluid ounce, while 28.3495 grams make one ounce. The two share a name and nothing else.

Why did the result show 0?

The value field reads as zero when it is empty or cannot be parsed. Type a real number and the result updates on the next keystroke.

Why is there a comma in the result?

The number formats according to your browser's locale. A viewer in a comma-decimal region sees 473,176 where one in the United States sees 473.176; the quantity is unchanged.

Can I scale a recipe with this?

Not well. Scaling multiplies every ingredient together — halving a recipe means halving each line, not converting one line. Use this page to convert a single measurement, then scale the recipe separately.

When to Use the Cooking Converter (and When Not To)

Reach for it when a recipe uses units you do not have on hand: a metric scale paired with an imperial book, a 500 ml jug with cups-based directions, or a tablespoon instruction when the spoons are packed away. Within a category the conversions are exact, so moving a single measurement between equivalent units is safe. A converter also helps when you follow a book from another country, where the same named cup means a different volume.

Leave it on the shelf for the two jobs it cannot do. Converting volume to weight for a specific ingredient needs its density, and scaling an entire recipe is arithmetic across all of its lines at once. When a recipe's success turns on precision, weigh your ingredients and convert within weight. Baking by weight is a habit worth keeping: a kitchen scale removes the guesswork that a heaped spoon or a settled cup can introduce. The converter is a helper, not a substitute for that habit.
