The page shows you two numbers while you type: a Words Per Minute figure and an accuracy percentage. WPM follows the standard formula (correct characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes, where five characters count as one word regardless of where the spaces fall. Accuracy is the share of your keystrokes that matched the passage exactly. Pick a difficulty, get a random passage at that level, and the timer begins the instant your first character lands in the input box.
Suppose you finish the passage in exactly one minute and 200 of your characters match. The tool divides 200 by 5 to get 40 words, then divides by 1 minute: 40 ÷ 1 = 40 WPM. If the same 200 correct characters took 80 seconds instead, the math becomes 200 ÷ 5 = 40, then 40 ÷ 1.33 = 30 WPM. Accuracy is independent of time: if you typed 220 characters total and 200 were correct, the figure is 200 ÷ 220 = 90.9%. The live panel recomputes both every fraction of a second, so the numbers crawl upward as you type and settle when the passage ends.
Every character you type is compared against the passage at that exact position. A typo that you immediately fix still counts as one wrong keystroke, because the comparison happens at the moment the key goes down, not on the final text. This is deliberate: it measures raw input quality, the way a transcription test would grade every stroke. It also means the timer punishes hesitation. The clock starts on your first keystroke and runs continuously, so stopping to think between words drags the WPM down. Pasting into the box is blocked entirely, because a pasted answer would record keystrokes that were never actually typed.
The three categories swap the vocabulary, not the scoring. Easy passages use short everyday sentences, medium ones shift to multi-sentence paragraphs with ordinary academic phrasing, and hard ones lean on long technical words like "quintessential" and "cryptographic." The passage itself is chosen at random from a bank of five per level, so a New Passage click gives you a different text at the same difficulty. Switching the dropdown mid-run discards the current attempt and deals a fresh passage, which is worth remembering if you finish one level and want a fair comparison on another.
It sits near the average for everyday office typing. Many data-entry and transcription roles ask for 50 to 70 WPM, and competitive typists exceed 100. Accuracy matters more than raw speed in most jobs, so a clean 40 beats a sloppy 70.
Because the test grades every keystroke against the passage at the moment it is pressed. A corrected error is still counted once as wrong, which is the standard way timed typing tests work.
As many times as you like. New Passage deals another random text at the current difficulty, and nothing from the previous run carries over or is stored anywhere.

The clock has not started because no characters have been typed yet. The first keystroke arms the timer, so the elapsed time only begins accruing once you start.
Use it to gauge your baseline before applying for a role with a typing requirement, to track weekly progress toward a goal, or to warm up before a long writing session. It is not a measure of coding speed, where punctuation and symbols dominate, and it cannot tell you anything about comprehension or editing quality. The one-minute format also flatters sprinters; if you need endurance data, run the hardest passage several times in a row and compare your later attempts against your first.
Scores cluster around a familiar curve: casual users land between 30 and 45 WPM, office professionals 50 to 70, transcription work commonly demands 75 to 95, and champion competitors exceed 130. Accuracy is the stricter gate for most employers — a 60 WPM typist at 99% accuracy is usually hired before a 90 WPM typist at 94%, because fixing mistakes costs more time than the extra speed saves.
Your number also depends on the keyboard you use. Mechanical keyboards with tactile switches and short key travel reward deliberate strokes, while low-travel laptop keys and membrane boards muffle feedback and can shave a few WPM off your best. Layout matters too: QWERTY is the default everyone learns first, whereas Dvorak and Colemak reduce finger movement once you invest in retraining your muscle memory.
If the score disappoints, the fastest gains come from touch typing — keeping your eyes off the keys and letting your fingers find the home row by feel. Hunt-and-peck typists rarely exceed 40 WPM because looking down breaks the rhythm; a few weeks of deliberate practice typically adds twenty points. Retest weekly at the same time of day after a short warm-up so you measure genuine improvement rather than caffeine and adrenaline.
